last night iw atched this interesting documentary, called something like _flight from death: quest for immortality_. i've a mild preoccupation with death, inspired by deep fear and existential angst. the movie pointed out how our symbolic culture is produced by our "death denying." all of this is stuff i've been thinking about on an off for a couple of years. striving for fame, or attaching paramount significance to a symbolic cause (a religion, a state), or blogging -- all of these are ways we work toward symbolic immortality -- toward meaningfulness. so my question is *what is the alternative*? and how does one extricate herself from these impulses. and should she be striving to do so?
